Buns Land The Spoils At Llantwit Major

Llantwit Major RFC 7 St Albans RFC 17

Many thanks to Match Sponsor Brian Free  (Freeo Ltd)

St Albans RFC continued on their winning ways with a rare but deserved away victory at Llantwit Major .  Both teams deserve massive credit for playing attacking rugby despite a very wet pitch and a gale sweeping across the field.throughout the game.

The first quarter was a tactical battle with both sides acclimitising to the conditions and feeling each other out.  The Buns, who kicked off, looked to pin the home team in their 22 before launching attacks.  The Llantwit team, realising the importance of territory, returned the kicks but it was the Buns who had ithe slight edge in both territory and possession.

The 2nd quarter was more of the same but with the big ball carriers from Llantwit making a bigger impact and creating situations that may have led to the game's first try.  Resolute Buns' defence, a feature of their season, saw off two try scoring opportunities for Llanwit and visibly lifted the away team.  A long range penalty goal, by outside half Ellis Jones, gave the Buns a 3-0 lead and a platform for the second half.

A lively Buns team talk had the desired effect with the away side registering the first try of the game only a few minutes into the second half.   Defying weather conditions, a few strong carries plus excellent interplay between forwards and backs saw captain, Loose Head prop, Josh Burridge cross the whitewash.  An excellent conversion from Ellis Jones, despite the savage cross winds, was the cherry on the cake.  Taking the Buns to 10-0.

Buoyed by their lead, the away team played with attacking intent and growing confidence.  Llanwit were still very dangerous but the  Buns set out to exert pressure and increase their lead.  Another sustained attack resulted in the home team conceding a 5 metre scrum.  The Buns took advantage of their prime position and centre Cameron Escott cut through for a try with Ellis Jones converting and stretching the lead to 17-0.

Llantwit Major continued to compete strongly and a few injuries saw the Buns resort to their bench.  The home side got their due reward scoring a try in the last minute - converted by an excellent kick from out wide.

A good day at the Office for the Buns - against strong opponents - only marred by a mounting injury list..

St Albans RFC seconds played their third game on successive Saturdays thanks to the efforts of Player Manager Andrew 'Wonky' Skrines.   Big thanks to Llantwit Fadre for making the trip down the A470 to give the boys valuable game time.  The away team were too good, too strong for the Buns who battled to the end.  It gave the Buns boys a useful 'benchmark' to target future improvement.

Any players of any ability are very welcome to get involved with the Buns; Twos who enjoy life on and off the field.
